Fashion throughout the 1940′s was influenced by the military. There were shoulder pads in every dress. Many of the dresses had buttons down the front at least in the top and pockets were definitely in during these years.
My mother was a teenager in high school in the 40′s. She loved to wear lightly gathered skirts with big pockets and white blouses with peter pan collars. Short bolero jackets were worn over the blouses that matched the skirt. Most skirts and dresses were just lightly gathered during the war years, because it took less material to make them.

The fashions were all waisted and were worn long, just below the knee. Hats were in fashion in the 1940′s. The war had a lot of influence on the type of hats that women wore in the 40′s. Berets were popular in that time era. Some hats were really fun to wear, they had wide brims and feathers on the side.
