The Charm Of Betty Boop

Betty Boop first appeared in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes on August 9, 1930.

Appearing in many comic strips she is very popular and even made a debut in a film series making her cartoon character well known all over the world.

Her character originally started as a French Poodle until 1932 when Max Fleischer transformed her into a young girl. The floppy poodle ears were changed to become her now famous hoop earrings and her poodle-like nose was changed to be a cute button nose.

Her personality was patterned after as a flapper girl, which is a term that was used in the 1920’s meaning she was a new breed of young women. She was a supporting character in 10 cartoons as a flapper girl, letting the audience know she has more heart than brains.

In 1934 Betty Boop appeared in her first and only color cartoon “Poor Cinderella”. In the film her hair color was red and not her traditional black hair like it is today.

The 1930’s were a very popular time for her being the star of Talkartoons and she was granted her very own series “Stopping The Show” in 1932. She was honored with the title “Queen Of The Animated Screen” until the series was canceled in 1939.

Despite the the fact that many people have never seen a Betty Boop cartoon she is more popular than ever and appears on many products like the Betty Boop checkbook cover which features her in a classic pose.
